The Detroit Lions made a coaching change on Saturday following their 41-25 loss to the Houston Texans on American Thanksgiving Day. According to Tim Twentyman of detroitlions.com, the Lions decided to fire head coach Matt Patricia, and general manager Bob Quinn, and named Darrell Bevell their interim head coach for the remainder of the 2020 National Football League regular season.
This has not been a good season at all for Detroit. They are currently in last place in the NFC North with a record of four wins and seven losses. Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp wanted to see Detroit be in at least playoff contention in the month of December, and due to the fact the Lions are not in the NFC East, a playoff spot appears to be a pipe dream at this stage of the season.
Bevell is 50 years of age, and a native of Yuma, Arizona. He has been the Lions offensive co-ordinator the last two seasons.
Bevell was previously the offensive co-ordinator of the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2010, and the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to 2017. During his time in Minnesota, Bevell worked with future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. Then with the Seahawks, Bevell played a major role in Seattle drafting seven-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson. Bevell was instrumental in the Seahawks beating the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII on February 3, 2014. However, the following year for Super Bowl XLIX on February 1, 2015, there was a controversial play call by Bevell on the final play of the game. With the Seahawks trailing the New England Patriots 28-24, Bevell decided to have Wilson pass the football instead of attempting to run the football into the end zone with either Wilson or running back Marshawn Lynch. As a result, Wilson threw an interception to Malcolm Butler, and preserve the Patriots’ win.
