Team Australia has now won 14 medals in the swimming pool. On Friday, in the women’s 100 metre freestyle, two Australians landed on the podium as Emma McKeon of Wollongong posted a gold medal-winning time of 51.96 seconds, and Cate Campbell of Brisbane won the bronze medal with a time of 52.52 seconds.
McKeon reached the podium by 0.63 seconds, and Campbell reached the podium by .07 seconds over fourth-place finisher and the 2016 Olympic 100 metre freestyle winner Penny Oleksiak of Canada. Meanwhile, Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong won the silver medal with a time of 52.27.
This was Haughey’s second medal of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. She previously won the silver medal in the women’s 200 metre freestyle behind Australian superstar Ariarne Titmus.
