Team Australia has now won 14 medals in the swimming pool. On Friday, in the women’s 100 metre freestyle, two Australians landed on the podium as Emma McKeon of Wollongong posted a gold medal-winning time of 51.96 seconds, and Cate Campbell of Brisbane won the bronze medal with a time of 52.52 seconds.

McKeon reached the podium by 0.63 seconds, and Campbell reached the podium by .07 seconds over fourth-place finisher and the 2016 Olympic 100 metre freestyle winner Penny Oleksiak of Canada. Meanwhile, Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong won the silver medal with a time of 52.27.

This was Haughey’s second medal of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. She previously won the silver medal in the women’s 200 metre freestyle behind Australian superstar Ariarne Titmus. Haughey also has 67% of Hong Kong’s medals at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. The other medal from Hong Kong at this year’s Olympic Games came from Cheung Ka Long in men’s foil fencing this past Monday, as Long won gold.

Meanwhile in women’s football, Australia won a dramatic game for the ages. In the second quarterfinal contest, the Aussies beat Great Britain 4-3 in extra time. During the extra 30 minutes of action, Australia outscored Great Britain 2-1 after the teams tied at two goals apiece after 90 minutes. The Australian star in this battle was Samantha Kerr of East Fremantle. Kerr scored in the 89th and 106th minutes. She now has five goals, which is the third most in the tournament to date. The other quarterfinals saw Canada beat Brazil 4-3 on penalty kicks after playing to a 0-0 tie,  Sweden beating Japan 3-1, and the United States beating the Netherlands 4-2 on penalties after playing to a 2-2 tie. Australia will play Sweden, and Canada will play the United States in the semifinals.
