After a sensational day five where Australians won seven medals, there are more medal opportunities today in swimming and canoeing. Meanwhile, women’s rugby sevens gets underway.

Rugby Sevens–Australia vs. Japan @ 11:30 am and Australia vs. China @ 6:30 pm

After a gold medal win by Fiji in men’s rugby sevens for the second straight Olympic Games, it is time for the women to enter Tokyo Stadium for the rugby sevens. New Zealand are the heavy favourites in the women’s competition, with Australia in the mix among a handful of other countries who are battling for silver and bronze.

Swimming–Finals start @ 11:30 am

Australia will try to build on their nine Olympic medals in the pool so far on Thursday. The Aussies have a representative in each of the five final events. In the men’s 800 metre freestyle (11:30 a.m.), Jack McLoughlin of South Brisbane will try to win his second medal in an individual event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. He previously won silver in the men’s 400 metre freestyle. A chance for a medal may be out of reach though as McLoughlin was between four and five seconds slower than the top three swimmers in the heats for the men’s 800 metre freestyle.

In the men’s 200 metre breaststroke (11:44 a.m.), Zac Stubblety-Cook of Brisbane is coming off an outstanding Australian Olympic Swimming Trials, where he set the Commonwealth record with a time of 2:06.28. Stubblety-Cook then had the fastest time in qualifying for the final (2:07.35). He will be in lane four.

In the women’s 200 metre butterfly (12:28 p.m.), Brianna Throssell of Subiaco is in lane seven for the final, while in the men’s 100 metre freestyle final (12:37 pm),  reigning Olympic gold medalist Kyle Chalmers of Port Lincoln is also in lane seven. Australia also has its sights on beating the Americans in the 4x200m freestyle relay (1:31 p.m.).

Canoeing–Women’s Canoe Slalom Final–4:55 p.m.

It was a fine race for Jessica Fox of Penrith in the women’s kayak slalom on Tuesday in winning bronze (a medal in the discipline for a third consecutive Olympic Games). Now the 27-year-old will be looking for her first Olympic medal in the women’s canoe slalom, after being the four-time world champion (2013, 2014, 2015, 2018).
