The 2021 National Bank Open is now in the books, with Russia’s Daniil Medvedev the winner on the men’s side, and Italy’s Camila Giorgi the winner on the women’s side. In Sunday’s final in Toronto, Medvedev defeated American Reilly Opelka 6-4, 6-3. Giorgi meanwhile beat Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-5 in the women’s final from Montreal.

For Medvedev, this was his fourth ATP Masters 1000 series title, as he previously won the 2019 Cincinnati Masters, the 2019 Shanghai Masters, and the 2020 Rolex Paris Masters in France. The Tennis 1000 Masters series events are considered the biggest events on the ATP Tour outside the majors and the annual ATP Finals, held in November. Among the other players Medvedev has beaten in the ATP Masters finals are David Goffin of Belgium (in Cincinnati), and Olympic gold medalist Alexander Zverev of Germany twice (in Shanghai and Paris).

This was Giorgi’s third WTA title. She previously won the 2015 Rosmalen Open in the Netherlands where she beat Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in the final, 7-5, 6-3. Giorgi also won the 2018 Linz Open, where she beat Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia in the final, 6-3, 6-1.

What was remarkable of Giorgi’s win in Montreal, is the fact she is the very first Italian singles tennis player (men or women) to win the National Bank Open. The tournament has been since 1881.

Giorgi also beat six players this past week who were ranked higher than her on the WTA rankings. Giorgi entered the National Bank Open ranked 71st. In addition to beating the fourth-seeded Pliskova, she defeated Belgium’s Elise Mertens (seeded ninth) in the first round, Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska (ranked 38th) in the second round, the Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova (seeded seventh) in the third round, American Cocco Gauff (seeded 15th) in the quarterfinals, and American Jessica Pegula (ranked 30th) in the semifinals.
