The Chicago Cubs obviously have in-game goals for relief pitcher Shelby Miller of Round Rock, Texas. They will just be for the 2027 Major League Baseball regular season instead of 2026.
This month the Cubs signed Miller to a two-year deal worth $2.5 million, However, the right-handed reliever will be out for the 2026 MLB season with elbow surgery he had in September according to the Associated Press.
This will be Miller’s second stint with the Cubs. The first did not go well at all. In 2021, Miller had an earned run average of 31.50 after three appearances. Miller pitched so bad, he gave up seven earned runs in only two innings before being released by the Cubs and signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The terrible stat line from five years ago has generated surprise that the Cubs are giving Miller another chance.
Last season, Miller split his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers. In 48 games, he had a record of four wins and three losses with an earned run average of 2.74. Miller threw 46 innings, and gave up 33 hits, 14 earned runs, five home runs and 15 walks, to go along with 54 strikeouts, 10 saves, nine holds, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.04.
This past season, Miller was excellent with the Diamondbacks and poor with the Brewers. He had an ERA of 1.98 in 37 games with Arizona and an ERA of 5.59 with the Brewers.
Miller has also pitched with St. Louis, Atlanta, Texas, San Francisco, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit. Despite losing 17 games with the Braves in 2015, Miller was still a National League All-Star.
