According to Jared Dubin of CBS Sports on Tuesday, Dallas Cowboys running back Ronald Jones II has been suspended by the National Football League for violating the National Football League’s performance enhancing drug policy. He has since stated that the drug he took was not a steroid and a drug that he has been prescribed for a heart condition.
Jones II signed with the Cowboys on March 21 to be the primary backup to Tony Pollard of Memphis, Tennessee. It is not expected that the Cowboys will bring back Ezekiel Elliott of St. Louis, Missouri, who they released on March 15, 2023 after seven seasons in Dallas. Due to the suspension, it is expected that the Cowboys leading backup running back will be Malik Davis of Tampa, Florida.
Jones II is joining his third National Football League franchise. He previously played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2018 to 2021, and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022. Jones II has actually won two Super Bowls since 2020. He was on the Buccaneers team that won in 2021, and the Chiefs team that won in 2023.
In 2022 with Kansas City, Jones II had 17 rushes for 70 yards and one touchdown, and one catch for 22 receiving yards. His 22-yard catch came in a 26-10 Chiefs win over the Los Angeles Rams on November 27. Jones II’s touchdown in 2022 was for two yards in a 31-13 Chiefs win over the Las Vegas Raiders on January 7. At the time, the major score put the Chiefs up 14-3.
While with the Buccaneers, Jones II had the longest run during the 2020 NFL season. The 98-yard touchdown rush was also the longest rush in Buccaneers history. It came in a 46-23 Buccaneers win over the Carolina Panthers on November 15, 2020.
