Cowboys fire head coach Mike McCarthy
January 15, 2025

According to TSN on Monday, the Dallas Cowboys have fired head coach Mike McCarthy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. McCarthy has been the head coach of the Cowboys the last five years. In that time, the Cowboys had a record of 49 wins and 35 losses for a winning percentage of .583.
However, in 2024, the Cowboys were three games below .500 at seven wins and 10 losses. One could argue a major reason why Dallas struggled was because Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was out for the season in Week 10 with a torn hamstring.
There is speculation that McCarthy could have interviews with the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints in the not too distant future. In addition to coaching the Cowboys, McCarthy coached the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons from 2006 to 2018. In that time, he had a record of 125 wins, 77 losses and two ties for a winning percentage of .618. McCarthy also guided the Packers to a Super Bowl title. In Super Bowl XLV, ironically in Dallas, the Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 on February 6, 2011.
McCarthy is one of four head coaches to be fired in the last two weeks. The others are Jerod Mayo of Hampton, Virginia by the New England Patriots, Doug Pederson of Bellingham, Washington by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Antonio Pierce of Long Beach, California by the Las Vegas Raiders.
One critic of the Cowboys this week was their former star quarterback Troy Aikman, who is currently the lead NFL analyst for ESPN. He was surprised of the firing and believes Jerry Jones does not have a plan going forward.
