The accolades continued for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp of Yakima, Washington on Wednesday. Kupp, who was the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player and 2021 National Football League Offensive Player of the Year, received the ESPY Awards for Best Championship Performance and best National Football League Player.
Kupp had eight catches for 92 yards in the Super Bowl, a game that saw the Rams defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20. In the regular season, Kupp had 145 catches for 1947 yards and 16 touchdowns. He led the NFL in all three offensive categories, becoming the 12th NFL wide receiver to record the receiving triple crown. In the playoffs, Kupp had 33 catches for 478 yards and six touchdowns as the Rams won their second Super Bowl in franchise history. Their first came in 2000 when they were known as the St. Louis Rams.
The best game of 2022 was also a National Football League game. In the AFC Divisional Playoff, the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills 42-36 in overtime. Patrick Mahomes threw the game-winning touchdown to tight end Travis Kelce. The pass went for eight yards.
The Chiefs win however did not come without controversy. The game was so exciting, that many believed the Bills should have had an opportunity to have possession of the football for one drive in the playoffs. In the offseason, the rules were changed.
Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos won the Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year. Players volunteered 900 hours through 745 engagements. That is more than two engagements a day. The Broncos also launched a gun buyback program.
