According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts have suspended cornerback Tony Brown of Beaumont, Texas and wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie of Miami, Florida. In addition to being a wide receiver, McKenzie is also a punt returner.
Brown and McKenzie have both been suspended for three games for conduct detrimental to the team, and their nameplates have been removed from their lockers in the Colts’s dressing room. There have been no reports as to the reason why Brown and McKenzie were suspended.
In 12 games this season, Brown has 10 combined tackles (eight solo tackles and two assisted tackles), one forced fumble, one pass deflection, and one interception for 34 yards. The forced fumble came in a 31-28 Colts win over the Tennessee Titans on December 3. Like McKenzie, Brown is a regular on special teams. He has been involved in 252 plays on special teams for the Colts this season and 1057 plays on special teams since joining the National Football League in 2018. Prior to joining the Colts in 2022, he played two seasons with the Green Bay Packers in 2018 and 2019, and one season with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021.
McKenzie meanwhile was in his first season with Indianapolis in 2023. He previously played two seasons with the Denver Broncos in 2017 and 2018, and five seasons with the Buffalo Bills from 2018 to 2022. This season McKenzie has 11 catches for 82 receiving yards, three rushes for 14 yards, 23 punt returns for 204 yards, and six kickoff returns for 152 yards.
Colts players suspended recently is nothing new. What is new is that McKenzie and Brown were suspended by the team. In the offseason, cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. and tight end Rashod Berry were suspended for gambling, and earlier this month, defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad was suspended for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing drug policy. The suspensions for Rodgers Sr., Berry and Muhammad were handed out by the NFL.
