The first World Golf Championship event of 2021 was to take place in Mexico City this past weekend, but was moved to Florida for this year. With the tournament taking place at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Collin Morikawa of Los Angeles, California, was the champion by three strokes.
Morikawa put together a four-round score of -18. He defeated Americans Billy Horschel and Brooks Koepka, as well as Norwegian phenom Viktor Hovland, by three strokes.
Morikawa had a first-round score of two-under-par 70, a second-round score of eight-under-par 64, a third-round score of five-under-par 67, and a fourth-round-score of three-under-par 69. After his sizzling second round, he found himself only one stroke back of Koepka, and then took the two-stroke lead over Koepka and Horschel after round three.
In a historic victory, Morikwawa, who is currently 24 years old, only becomes the second player ever to win a World Golf Championship event and a major title under the age of 25. Morikawa’s major title came at the 2020 PGA Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco, when he was 23 years old at the time.
The only other golfer to win a WGC event and a major title before the age of 25 was Tiger Woods of Cypress, California. Before turning 25, Woods had won the 1997 Masters, the 1999 PGA Championship, the 2000 United States Open, the 2000 British Open, the 2000 PGA Championship, the 1999 WGC-NEC Invitational, the 1999 WGC- American Express Championship, and the 2000 WGC-NEC Invitational.
Woods, meanwhile who suffered many injuries from a car accident in southern California last week, was honoured by many players on Sunday in the fourth and final round. Players such as Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, and Patrick Reed, wore a red shirt and black pants.
