Dylan Lucas could make one of the fastest recoveries from a serious ankle injury in NRL history, with the Newcastle Knights star reportedly a “big chance” to be named for Sunday’s sudden-death semi-final against the Warriors.
Lucas has not played since suffering a fracture-dislocation of his left ankle during Newcastle’s one-point loss to the Sydney Roosters in Round 21.
The gruesome injury initially appeared certain to end his season.
However, the NSW Blues back-rower has progressed so rapidly that Newcastle could include him in its extended squad for the trip to Eden Park, according to Fox Sports.
Andrew Johns and Newcastle journalist Barry Toohey have both indicated Lucas is pushing to return considerably earlier than expected.
If he plays against the Warriors, Lucas would reportedly complete his recovery only eight weeks after suffering the injury.
That would better the 10-week comeback achieved by former Knights forward Aidan Guerra after a similar injury in 2019.
The potential inclusion would give Newcastle an enormous boost as it attempts to reach its first preliminary final since 2013.
It would also present coach Justin Holbrook with one of the most difficult selection decisions of the finals.
Conflicting Reports Create Genuine Selection Mystery
Lucas’ status remains far from certain.
An NRL.com report published before Newcastle’s 20-10 elimination-final victory over South Sydney claimed he could return if the Knights reached the grand final.
That report said Australian selectors had been informed Lucas would be available for the Rugby League World Cup, which begins in October.
Newcastle officials reportedly believed a grand-final appearance was possible if the club survived long enough.
Fox Sports’ subsequent report suggested a dramatically accelerated timeline, identifying Lucas as a chance to face the Warriors in week two of the finals.
The conflicting information means his likely availability should be treated cautiously until Newcastle names its squad and completes its medical assessments.
Being included among the reserves would not guarantee Lucas plays.
It would merely allow the Knights to continue testing his fitness before reducing their squad closer to kick-off.
Lucas must demonstrate more than an ability to run without pain. He needs sufficient strength, mobility and confidence to withstand lateral movement, repeated tackles and the defensive workload of an NRL edge forward.
A finals match at Eden Park is hardly a controlled reintroduction.
The Warriors will repeatedly test Newcastle’s edges with powerful ball-carriers and shape designed to force defenders into difficult one-on-one decisions.
If Lucas is selected, there can be no room for sentiment.
He must be physically ready.
Newcastle Has Survived Without Its Origin Star
The Knights deserve considerable credit for keeping their season alive after losing Lucas and Dylan Brown to serious injuries.
Lucas was among the competition’s best back-rowers before his setback and made his State of Origin debut for NSW during the Blues’ successful 2026 campaign.
His speed, defensive effort and ability to threaten both inside and outside opposition halves made him an essential part of Newcastle’s structure.
The club initially turned to Francis Manuleleua, who has emerged as one of its most exciting young forwards.
Newcastle moved quickly to extend Manuleleua’s contract after he impressed during his unexpected run in first grade.
The 22-year-old retained his starting position during Newcastle’s elimination-final victory over South Sydney and now faces the possibility of making way for Lucas.
That would be an extraordinarily difficult call.
Manuleleua has performed the role asked of him and helped the Knights reach the second weekend of the finals. Dropping him for a player returning eight weeks after a fracture-dislocation would carry obvious risk.
Holbrook could instead name Lucas on the interchange and reduce the physical demands of his comeback.
That option would allow Lucas to provide impact without immediately exposing him to 80 minutes of finals football.
However, carrying an edge forward with an uncertain workload also limits Newcastle’s flexibility if another player is injured during the match.
Lucas Could Transform Newcastle’s Left Edge
A healthy Lucas would make Newcastle considerably more dangerous.
Kalyn Ponga, Bradman Best and Greg Marzhew already give the Knights one of the most explosive attacking combinations in the competition.
Lucas adds another powerful running option capable of exploiting defenders who become preoccupied with Ponga’s movement out the back.
The Warriors cannot simply slide towards Best and Marzhew if Lucas is threatening a hard line closer to the ruck.
His inclusion would also improve Newcastle defensively against a Warriors team that entered the finals in outstanding attacking form.
Although the Dolphins restricted New Zealand during their 26-16 qualifying-final victory, the Warriors had averaged 39 points across their previous matches since Round 22.
Newcastle has already felt the force of that attack.

Lucas cannot erase that history by himself.
He can give Newcastle a stronger defensive presence and another dangerous runner in a match likely to be decided by which team controls the edges.
Warriors Have Their Own Injury Crisis
Newcastle is not the only side facing major selection questions.
The Warriors are expected to lose Jackson Ford after the front-rower injured his ankle during the qualifying-final defeat to the Dolphins.
Ford had only just returned from a pectoral injury and is considered unlikely to recover during the eight-day turnaround.
Leka Halasima is also in doubt after suffering a hamstring injury during the warm-up, while Jacob Laban reportedly battled a knee problem throughout the loss.
Those concerns could leave the Warriors without three important forwards for a match in which Newcastle will attempt to attack them through the middle.
Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is expected to return from a broken collarbone, potentially pushing Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad into the centres.
That would restore an experienced finisher but will not compensate for every possible absence in the forward pack.
Newcastle should still expect a furious response.
The Warriors surrendered a 16-8 lead against the Dolphins after controlling most of the qualifying final. Returning to Eden Park gives them an opportunity to rescue a season that had appeared destined to continue into the preliminary finals.
Knights Cannot Let the Comeback Become a Distraction
Lucas’ rapid recovery is remarkable regardless of whether he plays this weekend.
It also needs to remain secondary to Newcastle’s broader preparation.
The Knights cannot spend the week waiting for one player to receive medical clearance while the remainder of the side prepares for the most important match of its season.
Holbrook needs a definitive plan for both outcomes.
If Lucas is cleared, Newcastle must determine whether he starts, comes from the bench or is retained among the reserves as insurance.
If he is unavailable, Manuleleua deserves to continue in the role he has performed throughout the club’s late-season surge.
The Knights received several important inclusions before defeating South Sydney, with Dominic Young, Tyson Frizell and Phoenix Crossland strengthening a side already containing Ponga, Best, Dane Gagai and Marzhew.
Those returns helped Newcastle overcome the Rabbitohs without relying upon a speculative comeback.
Lucas would be another major weapon.
He should not be treated as the player solely responsible for extending Newcastle’s season.
Medical Clearance Must Carry More Weight Than History
The possibility of breaking Guerra’s recovery record makes Lucas’ return an irresistible finals story.
It should not influence the final decision.
Every fracture-dislocation is different, and returning faster than another player does not necessarily prove superior fitness or rehabilitation.
Lucas has a potential World Cup campaign and a long NRL career beyond this weekend.
Newcastle must be certain that playing him does not create an unacceptable risk of aggravation or another injury caused by compensating for reduced movement.
If the medical staff clears him and Lucas completes every required test, his selection could become a defining moment in the Knights’ premiership campaign.
If any doubt remains, Newcastle must resist the temptation.
The Knights have already demonstrated that they can win without him.
Lucas is reportedly a “big chance” to produce an extraordinary finals comeback.
The more important question is whether that chance is worth taking.
