Cardinals name Jonathan Gannon head coach

According to Josh Alper of NBC Sports on Tuesday, the Arizona Cardinals named Jonathan Gannon as their new head coach, two days after the franchise hosted the Super Bowl. The new Cardinals heard coach has very familiar of the area in the last week, as Gannon was recently the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, the franchise that represented the National Football Conference at this past weekend’s Super Bowl, before losing 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gannon, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, is 40 years of age. He is the second assistant coach of the Eagles in two days to be named a head coach. Yesterday, we reported that Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen of Sacramento, California would be the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

This is Gannon’s first NFL head coaching job. However, he has plenty of assistant coaching experience. He was the Arizona Cardinals defensive quality control coach (2007), the Tennessee Titans defensive quality control coach (2012 to 2013), the Minnesota Vikings assistant defensive backs coach (2014 to 2017), the Indianapolis Colts defensive backs coach (2018 to 2020), and the Eagles defensive coordinator the last two seasons (2021 to 2022).

In addition to being an assistant coach, Gannon was part of the St. Louis Rams’s scouting department for three years. He was a college scout in 2009, and a professional scout in 2010 and 2011. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at the University of Louisville from 2003 to 2006.

This past season the Eagles led the NFC with 477 points. They also gave up the fourth fewest points in the NFC too. Only the San Francisco 49ers (277), Washington Commanders (343), and the Dallas Cowboys (344), gave up fewer points than the Eagles.

The Cardinals underachieved in 2023. They were last in the NFC West at four wins and 13 losses.
