According to Natasha Dye of People Magazine, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Jeff Gladney of New Boston, Texas died on Monday from a car accident at age 25. The accident happened in Dallas according to Amir Vera and David Close of CNN.
Two people died in the accident according to the preliminary investigation, and speeding was a factor. The other fatality was Gladney’s girlfriend, Mercedes Palacios according to Lara Wildenberg of the U.S. Sun.
According to audacy.com, Gladney struck the rear end of another vehicle. Reports from techstry.net state Gladney’s vehicle lost control, hit a brick wall, the car overturned, and burst into flames.
Gladney had played one season in the National Football League. That was with the Arizona Cardinals in 2020. In 16 games, Gladney had 81 combined tackles (63 solo tackles and 18 assisted tackles), seven tackles for a loss, one quarterback hit, three pass deflections and one forced fumble.
In an interesting note, Gladney did not play the entire 2021 NFL season after receiving an indictment for domestic violence. He was released by the Vikings on August 3, 2021, but was found not guilty on the assault charge according to Ryan Young of Yahoo! Sports.
Gladney then signed with the Cardinals on March 16, 2022, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. He never had a chance to play a game with Arizona and only had been property of the Cardinals for two and a half months before Gladney’s death. The signing of Gladney by Arizona came on the same day the Las Vegas Raiders signed defensive end Chandler Jones away from the Cardinals to a three-year deal worth $52.5 million.
