Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman to join LIV Tour

According to Riley Hamel of Golfweek, two Australian golf stars are on their way to the LIV Golf Series. Cameron Smith of Brisbane and Marc Leishman of Warrnambool are set to join the controversial Saudi Arabia-based series even though the two golfers are scheduled to participate in the FedEx Cup Playoffs which starts Thursday with the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee.

Hamel’s source at this time is Australian golfer Cameron Percy of Chelsea. This past week at the Wyndham Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, Percy finished with a score of -11 to finish in a tie for eighth place. That was Percy’s third top 10 finish in 2022 as he was fourth at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominic Republic and seventh at the Puerto Rico Open.

Smith has dodged questions regarding his future status on the PGA Tour. The fact that he is not commenting has made people question his loyalty to the tour when PGA Tour stars Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas have been emphatic in their support.

You could make the argument that Smith could be the PGA Tour Player of the Year, a feat that has only been accomplished by one other Australian. Ironically, it was LIV Tour Chief Executive Officer Greg Norman of Mount Isa, who received the honour in 1995.

In 2022, he won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii with a PGA Tour four-round score record -34, the Players Championship and the British Open. Smith and Leishman made golf headlines in 2021 when they teamed up to join forces to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in the only team event on the PGA Tour. Leishman has five other career wins on the PGA Tour since 2012, while Smith has five wins too since 2017.
