Cameron Norrie of London, England had a comeback for the ages on Thursday in the third round of the 2026 National Bank Open in Montreal, Quebec. Down 7-5, 5-2 to Australia’s Alex de Minaur, Norrie won four of the next five games in the second set to force a tiebreak en route to winning the match 5-7, 7-6, 6-1. De Minaur also had a match point with Norrie serving in the seventh game of the second set.
This was de Minaur’s second ATP event since his high profile marriage to Katie Boulter of Great Britain. Last week at the Citi Open in Washington, de Minaur was the number one seed, but lost 7-6, 6-4 to American Brandon Nakashima in the quarterfinals. It was a quick exit for Boulter in Canada too as she lost her first round match to 177th ranked Kayla Cross of Canada, 7-6, 7-5.
Norrie has now beaten de Minaur four times in seven meetings. He also beat de Minaur 6-3, 6-3 in the round robin of the 2023 United Cup in Sydney, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 in the round robin of the 2024 United Cup in Perth, and 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of Indian Wells in 2026.
Next up for Norrie is the 18th seed Arthur Fils of France. The round of 16 matchup will be their first ever meeting head-to-head.
With Norrie out of the National Bank Open in Canada, there are two Australians left. Alexei Popyrin of Sydney, the 2024 National Bank Open champion, is facing Thiago Agustin Tirante of Argentina in round three. Popyrin upset the 32nd seed Raphael Collignon of Belgium 6-4, 6-3 in round two. This will be the first ever meeting between Tirante and Popyrin.
Meanwhile, Maya Joint, who is fresh off her high profile first round Wimbledon win over Serena Williams, will be playing Liudmila Samsonova of Russia in the third round in Toronto on Friday. Joint upset the 14th seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania, 6-4 6-4 in the second round on Wednesday. Samsonova won their only prior match, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of Wimbledon in 2025.
