For the fourth time in 2021, an Australian has won on the PGA Tour. On Sunday at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, Michigan, Cameron Davis of Sydney, Australia won his first career PGA Tour event when he defeated American Troy Merritt of Osage, Iowa, and Joaquin Niemann of Chile in a playoff.
Davis, Merritt, and Niemann all finished 72 holes at 18-under-par. Then in the playoff, Niemann was eliminated on the first playoff hole when he recorded a bogey, while Davis and Merritt both collected pars. Davis and Merritt then recorded pars on the next two playoff holes, and then each had a birdie on the fourth playoff hole. When it came to the fifth playoff hole, Davis made par, while Merritt had a bogey on the par-three 15th.
Davis meanwhile had a marvelous back nine on Sunday where he shot a five-under-par 31. After recording birdies on the 12th, 13th, and 14th holes, and a bogey on the 15th hole, Davis recorded the shot of the tournament on the par-five 17th hole. Here, the 26-year-old Australian made a remarkable eagle from the bunker to move to -17. He then had a birdie on the 18th hole.
This was the second straight week on the PGA Tour, that there was an extensive playoff. A week ago, Harris English won the second-longest playoff all-time in PGA Tour history when he won the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.
Meanwhile, the other three Australians to win on the PGA Tour in 2021 were Matt Jones of Sydney, Marc Leishman of Warrnambool, and Cameron Smith of Brisbane. Jones won the Honda Classic back in March, and then Smith and Leishman teamed up to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
