The Sydney Roosters have left the door open for Sam Walker to make a remarkable late-season return after confirming their star halfback underwent successful surgery on a serious ankle injury.
Walker suffered a high-grade syndesmosis injury during the Roosters’ damaging 26-12 defeat to the Dolphins at Allianz Stadium.
Initial reports indicated the injury would end his 2026 campaign, with the 24-year-old expected to require approximately six to eight weeks of rehabilitation.
However, the Roosters stopped short of officially ruling Walker out for the remainder of the season when providing their post-surgery update.
“Walker underwent surgery on Sunday and will work closely with the club’s medical and rehabilitation staff towards a return to play as his recovery allows,” the club said.
Walker’s Ankle Trapped in Awkward Tackle
Walker was injured during the second half of the Roosters’ defeat when his ankle became trapped beneath Dolphins forward Kulikefu Finefeuiaki.
The halfback immediately showed signs of considerable discomfort and left the field in the 53rd minute.
Hugo Savala replaced him in the halves, but the Roosters could not recover as the Dolphins completed a 26-12 victory and strengthened their position near the top of the ladder.
Scans subsequently confirmed the syndesmosis damage and Walker underwent surgery the following day.
The successful procedure is encouraging, but the required rehabilitation period creates a substantial obstacle to any return during the finals.
Even if the Roosters reach the grand final, Walker would need to recover considerably faster than the reported six-to-eight-week timeframe to play again this season.
Grand Final Return Appears Extremely Unlikely
The 2026 NRL grand final is scheduled for October 4, leaving Walker with only approximately five weeks to recover from surgery.
A conventional six-week rehabilitation would take him beyond the premiership decider, while an eight-week recovery would push his return deep into the off-season.
The Roosters’ statement is therefore not confirmation that Walker is expected to play again this year.
It merely avoids closing the possibility before the club can assess his response to surgery and the early stages of rehabilitation.
Syndesmosis injuries also vary considerably in severity. Walker must regain mobility, strength and confidence before progressing through running, change-of-direction work and contact training.
Returning a week or two ahead of schedule may be possible in some circumstances, but doing so after surgery carries obvious risks.
The Roosters will not jeopardise Walker’s long-term fitness simply to create a dramatic grand-final comeback.
Roosters Lose Their Most Important Attacking Player
Walker’s injury could hardly have arrived at a worse time.
The Queensland halfback has produced arguably the finest season of his career, combining with veteran recruit Daly Cherry-Evans to transform the Roosters into a genuine premiership threat.
Walker had recorded a competition-leading 22 try assists before suffering the injury and provided the attacking unpredictability that complemented Cherry-Evans’ control.
His speed, support play and willingness to attack short sides gave the Roosters a dimension few opponents could comfortably contain.
Walker’s form also earned him the Queensland No.7 jersey during the 2026 State of Origin series. He was named player of the match after directing the Maroons to victory in Game Two in Melbourne.
Losing that version of Walker immediately before the finals significantly reduces the Roosters’ attacking ceiling.
Cherry-Evans Must Return to Halfback
Cherry-Evans is now expected to move back into the No.7 jersey he occupied throughout more than 300 appearances for Manly.
The positional adjustment should not create any concerns for the 37-year-old.
He remains one of the NRL’s most experienced game managers and possesses the kicking game required to guide the Roosters through high-pressure finals matches.
The greater question surrounds who will partner him.
Savala is the leading candidate to return to five-eighth after filling several roles for Trent Robinson during the season. His composure and kicking ability make him the logical replacement, although he cannot replicate Walker’s individual attacking threat.
The Roosters may consequently become more reliant upon James Tedesco, Reece Robson and Connor Watson to create opportunities around the ruck.
Mark Nawaqanitawase, Robert Toia and the club’s other dangerous outside backs will also need to generate more attacking momentum without Walker connecting both sides of the field.
Injury Revives Painful 2024 Memories
Walker has already endured one devastating injury immediately before a Roosters finals campaign.
He ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during the closing rounds of the 2024 season, ruling him out of the finals and delaying his return until midway through 2025.
A broken thumb then extended his absence shortly before he was due to make his NRL comeback.
Walker eventually returned and rebuilt his game, producing the career-best football that made this latest setback particularly cruel.
The positive difference is that a syndesmosis injury should not threaten the same lengthy rehabilitation demanded by an ACL reconstruction.
Even if Walker does not return during the finals, he should have ample time to recover before the beginning of the 2027 season.
Contract Decision Still Looms
The injury has also arrived during an important period in Walker’s contract negotiations.
He is signed through the end of 2027 but can negotiate with rival clubs from November 1 for the 2028 season.
The Roosters had been discussing a four-year extension that could become the richest contract in club history, although those negotiations were reportedly placed on hold while Walker concentrated on the premiership campaign.
Interest from expansion clubs and rival NRL teams is expected to drive his value towards $1.5 million per season if he reaches the open market.
The ankle injury should not materially damage Walker’s long-term value.
He remains only 24 and has already demonstrated that he can successfully return from a much more serious knee reconstruction. His 2026 performances also established him as one of the competition’s leading playmakers.
The immediate priority will be completing his rehabilitation rather than resolving his future.
Roosters Must Plan as Though Walker Is Finished
The Roosters are entitled to preserve hope that Walker could recover faster than expected.
Successful surgery means the rehabilitation process can begin, and the club loses nothing by assessing his progress before making a definitive announcement.
However, Robinson must prepare for the finals on the assumption that his halfback will not return.
A five-week comeback from surgery for a high-grade syndesmosis injury would represent an extraordinary recovery. Walker would then need to prove he could change direction, kick repeatedly and survive contact at finals intensity.
If the Roosters reach the grand final and Walker receives medical clearance, Robinson will face an enormous selection decision.
Until then, the premiership campaign belongs to Cherry-Evans and Savala.
The Roosters have not officially closed the door on Walker’s season, but it remains open only narrowly.
