Brooks Koepka and Danny Willett withdraw from The Players Championship

Two major champions will not be participating at the 2021 Players Championship, which will start from TPC Sawgrass, outside of Jacksonville, Florida. On Sunday, during the fourth round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, it was reported by Kyle Porter of CBS Sports, that Brooks Koepka of West Palm Beach, Florida would miss this weekend because of a knee injury. Then on Tuesday, Danny Willett of Sheffield, England withdrew from the tournament because he tested positive for coronavirus according to Ryan Lavner of Golf Channel.

Koepka did not play at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this past weekend which was won by U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau. So far in 2021, Koepka won the Waste Management Phoenix Open last month and is a serious threat to win on the PGA Tour every single time he participates. Despite winning four major career titles (the 2018 and 2019 PGA Championship, and the 2017 and 2018 United States Open), eight PGA events overall, and being ranked 12th in the world, Koepka has never won The Players’ Championship.

Willett meanwhile won his major title five years ago when he won the 2016 Masters, in a dramatic three-stroke come from behind win over Jordan Spieth of the United States. Willett finished tied for 31st at the Arnold Palmer Classic this past weekend.

The American state of Florida continues to be decimated by coronavirus. There have been 1,957,586 cases of coronavirus in Florida, with 691,177 active cases, and 32,012 deaths. There have been 86 deaths of the disease within the last 24 hours alone. Willett is being replaced in the tournament by Kramer Hickok of Austin, Texas.
