Brooke Henderson leads after second round of 2022 Evian Championship
July 24, 2022
The second round is in the books at the 2022 Evian Championship in Evian-les-Bains, France and Canadian Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario has a three-stroke lead. For the second straight day, Henderson posted a score of seven-under-par 64, and is now at -14, and has a three-stroke lead over American Olympic gold medalist and 2021 Women’s PGA Championship winner Nelly Korda.
Henderson, who you could argue is the greatest Canadian professional golfer of all-time (Marlene Stewart Streit of Cereal, Alberta is the best Canadian amateur golfer), is looking to be the first Canadian ever to win two major titles. Henderson already won the 2016 Women’s PGA Championship in Seattle, Washington, where she beat New Zealand’s Lydia Ko in a playoff.

The other two Canadians to win a major were Sandra Post of Oakville, Ontario, who won the 1968 LPGA Championship in Sutton, Massachusetts, and Mike Weir of Sarnia, Ontario, who won the 2003 Masters. Post was 20 years old at the time, and set the record for the youngest LPGA golfer to win a major. Ko is currently the youngest golfer to win a major as she was only 18 years old when she won the 2015 Evian Masters. Weir meanwhile became the first left-handed golfer to ever win the Masters, and the second left-handed golfer to ever win a major championship. The first was Bob Charles of Carterton, New Zealand, who won the 1963 British Open.
On a personal note, I have had the privilege of writing the biographies of several of Canada’s top golfers for the Canadian Encyclopedia. Here is Henderson’s biography.
