Bronson Xerri Chooses Melbourne Storm Over NRL Rivals to Begin New Chapter

Bronson Xerri had interest from several clubs after being granted permission to leave Canterbury early. In the end, one of the NRL’s most successful clubs won the race for his signature.

The Melbourne Storm have officially secured Xerri on a three-year deal from the start of the 2027 season, with the Bulldogs granting the 25-year-old an early release from the final year of his contract.

The signing ends weeks of speculation surrounding Xerri’s future.

Melbourne had emerged as the frontrunner before the June 30 transfer deadline, with Parramatta also showing strong interest in the strike centre. At one stage, the Storm even explored the possibility of bringing Xerri to the club immediately to bolster their injury-hit backline, although Canterbury ultimately retained him for the remainder of the 2026 season.

Reports indicate the Eels have emerged as the frontrunners for Luai’s signature should he become available, while the Perth Bears are also monitoring the situation as they continue building their inaugural squad.

For Parramatta, the attraction is obvious.

Luai remains one of the NRL’s elite five-eighths, boasting four premierships, State of Origin experience and a proven ability to perform in the biggest moments. Pairing him with Mitchell Moses would instantly create one of the competition’s most dangerous halves combinations.

Perth, meanwhile, also has a compelling case.

Instead, Xerri will finish the season with the Bulldogs before beginning a new chapter under Craig Bellamy.

The move represents another important piece of Melbourne’s roster rebuild.

The Storm are preparing to lose experienced outside backs Will Warbrick and Nick Meaney at the end of the season, while uncertainty also remains around Jack Howarth’s long-term position. Xerri and Jamayne Isaako will now headline Melbourne’s revamped backline from 2027 onwards.

Storm football manager Frank Ponissi believes Xerri is the ideal fit.

“We’re thrilled to have Bronson joining our club on a three-year deal,” Ponissi said in the club’s announcement.

“He’s a tough, competitive player with great speed and athleticism who we believe will be an important addition to our outside backs heading into the next three years.”

For Xerri, the move continues one of the NRL’s most remarkable comeback stories.

After serving a four-year suspension for anti-doping violations, Canterbury handed him an opportunity to revive his career ahead of the 2024 season. He has since rebuilt his reputation, playing more than 50 games for the Bulldogs and re-establishing himself as one of the competition’s most dangerous centres.

His 2026 campaign hasn’t been without challenges.

Xerri was dropped after the opening round and spent time in NSW Cup before forcing his way back into the first-grade side. One of his standout performances came ironically against Melbourne, where he ran for more than 200 metres and broke 13 tackles in a performance that further highlighted his attacking ability.

Speaking after the move was confirmed, Xerri made it clear there are no hard feelings towards Canterbury.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time as a Bulldog and have been lucky enough to form friendships that will last a lifetime,” Xerri said.

“This club gave me an opportunity to return to the NRL and for that I am truly grateful.”

He also stressed that his focus remains on helping the Bulldogs finish the current season strongly before relocating to Melbourne.

For the Storm, it’s another reminder of why they remain one of the NRL’s premier recruitment clubs.

Time and again, Melbourne has identified players with untapped potential and developed them into representative stars.

Craig Bellamy will now hope Bronson Xerri becomes the next success story.
