According to Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports on Monday, there was a National Football League trade made this past weekend involving the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. The 49ers received linebacker Randy Gregory of Jacksonville, Florida from the Broncos. The 49ers also picked up a seventh round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, while the Broncos received a sixth round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Gregory is joining his third NFL franchise. He previously spent five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys from 2015 to 2021 at defensive end, and the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos. In 2023, Gregory had nine combined tackles (five assisted tackles and four solo tackles), two quarterback hits, two tackles for a loss, one sack and one pass deflection.

In Gregory’s career, he has played in 60 NFL regular season games. He has 106 combined tackles (75 solo tackles and 31 assisted tackles), 23 tackles for a loss, 61 quarterback hits, one interception for 12 yards, three pass deflections, 19.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries for two yards. The lone interception came in a 27-20 Cowboys win over the Washington Football Team on December 12, 2021.

There is no doubt that Gregory has a troubled past. He missed the entire 2017 National Football League season because he missed a scheduled drug test. Then in 2019, Gregory was suspended a full year again for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The Broncos were reportedly close to releasing Gregory, but found a trade partner instead.

San Francisco and Denver are two teams heading in opposite directions. At 5-0, you could argue that the 49ers are one of the best teams in the league. At 1-4, you could argue that the Broncos are one of the worst.
