Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal in overtime as the Denver Broncos beat the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 17-14 on Thursday Night Football, lifting Denver to 4-2 and dropping Seattle to 3-3.
The Broncos’ win was confirmed by ESPN and detailed in NFL.com’s What We Learned wrap by Grant Gordon. Lutz’s kick at 4:53 of overtime finished a low-scoring game at Empower Field at Mile High after Seattle forced overtime with a late rally.
Denver’s defence sacked Sam Darnold five times and intercepted him twice, according to NFL.com. Cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian’s overtime interception set up the winning field goal, after Kris Abrams-Draine had also picked Darnold earlier.
The Broncos led 14-3 at half-time through short rushing touchdowns from J.K. Dobbins (4 yards) and RJ Harvey (1 yard), both converted by Lutz, per the ESPN box score. Seattle’s only first-half points were a 55-yard Jason Myers field goal.
Seattle’s late surge
The Seahawks were scoreless in the third quarter before George Holani’s 1-yard rush and a two-point conversion pass from Darnold to Rashid Shaheed made it 14-11 with 5:41 left in the fourth. Myers then tied the game 14-14 with a 34-yard field goal with three seconds remaining.
