Brian Campbell of Orange County, California has won the 2025 Mexican Open. The 31-year-old posted a four round score of -20 and beat 20-year-old Aldrich Potgieter of Pretoria, South Africa in a playoff.
The playoff was extremely interesting when you consider the fact Campbell and Potgieter are direct opposites when it comes to driving, According to golf.com, Campbell only averages 277.8 yards per drive, the lowest average drive on the PGA Tour. Potgieter meanwhile, has the largest average drive on the PGA Tour at 326.9 yards per drive.
In the playoff, it was Campbell who came out with a win as he had a birdie on the second playoff hole. Campbell and Potgieter both parred the first playoff hole. In the playoff, Campbell had a tee shot of 299 yards on the first playoff hole and Potgieter’s tee shot was 315 yards. Then on the second playoff hole, Campbell had a tee shot of 227 yards, while Potgieter was at 321 yards. The 18th hole was used for both playoff holes. It is interesting that Campbell won the tournament even though he drove the golf ball 110 fewer yards than Potgeiter.
During the tournament, Campbell posted a first round score of six-under-par, second round score of six-under-par, third round score of seven-under-par and a fourth round score of one-under-par. Campbell had two eagles in the four rounds. On Thursday in round one, he posted a score of three on the par five 18th hole, and on Friday in round two, he posted a score of two on the par four second hole.
Five other golfers were in contention. American Isaiah Salinda of San Francisco, California was alone in third place at -19. England’s Aaron Rai and American Ben Griffin of Chapel Hill, North Carolina were tied for fourth place at -18, and Germany’s Stephan Jaeger and American Joel Dahmen of Clarkston, Washington were tied for sixth place at -17.
Campbell recorded his first PGA Tour victory. This was the second straight year that there was a first time winner on the PGA Tour at the Mexican Open. The 2023 champion was Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, California.Â
