Where Will the NRL Spend Its $5.3 Billion Windfall? Peter V’landys’ Big Plans Revealed

The NRL has secured the richest broadcast deal in Australian sporting history. Now comes the even bigger question—how will Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo spend the game’s record-breaking $5.3 billion payday?

The seven-year agreement with Nine, Foxtel, DAZN and Sky NZ doesn’t just guarantee rugby league’s financial future. It gives the NRL a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape the sport from the grassroots to the global stage.

According to The Daily Telegraph, several major priorities have already emerged as the NRL begins planning how to invest the unprecedented financial windfall.

Bigger Salary Cap and Better Player Pay

Perhaps the biggest winner will be the players.

Industry estimates suggest the salary cap could increase from around $12.4 million to as much as $20 million over the life of the agreement, allowing clubs to retain more elite talent while helping the NRL compete against rival sporting codes and overseas competitions.

The increased funding is also expected to flow into higher minimum salaries, improved women’s payments and increased State of Origin match payments.

Expansion to 20 Teams

Expansion remains firmly on the agenda.

The Perth Bears will join the competition in 2027, followed by the PNG franchise in 2028. The NRL has made no secret of its desire to introduce a 20th team, with Christchurch widely considered the leading contender.

V’landys has also spoken publicly about eventually taking rugby league into Europe and the United States if the opportunity arises.

Investing in Grassroots Rugby League

Participation is expected to receive a significant boost.

According to reports, junior development, community facilities and participation programs are likely to receive increased investment as the NRL looks to ensure growth isn’t confined to the elite level.

Growing participation has been one of V’landys’ key priorities throughout his tenure, particularly as rugby league expands into new markets.

Building a Global Game

One of the most intriguing parts of the deal is DAZN’s involvement.

The streaming giant reaches more than 100 million subscribers across over 200 countries, giving the NRL a genuine global platform for the first time.

The league has already floated ideas including Global Round, international fixtures and greater overseas promotion as it attempts to grow its international audience.

Clubs Could Receive Record Funding

While exact distributions are yet to be finalised, clubs are expected to receive substantial increases in annual funding.

That money would allow clubs to invest in football departments, high-performance facilities, pathways and fan engagement while easing financial pressure on organisations that have historically relied heavily on leagues clubs or wealthy benefactors.

Better Scheduling for Fans

For the first time in decades, the NRL will regain control of its own fixture.

Rather than broadcasters dictating scheduling, the league will determine the draw itself, allowing it to prioritise competitive fairness, player welfare and fan experience.

That could eventually lead to Origin windows, fewer short turnarounds and a more balanced competition.

Technology and Fan Experience

The financial boost is also expected to accelerate investment in technology.

Areas such as officiating, digital products, streaming, statistics, international distribution and fan engagement are all expected to benefit as the NRL looks to modernise the game on and off the field.

This Is More Than a TV Deal

The headline figure is impressive.

But the true legacy of the agreement won’t be measured by dollars.

It will be determined by what the NRL builds over the next decade.

If V’landys and Abdo successfully invest the money into players, clubs, grassroots participation and global expansion, this could become the deal that transformed rugby league forever.

The $5.3 billion is only the beginning.

What the NRL does next will determine whether it becomes the defining moment in the sport’s history.
