Taylor Marshall Delivers Emotional Stradbroke Win Aboard Spicy Martini

Taylor Marshall knew exactly what his late father John would have made of his maiden Group 1 victory.

As the young Queensland jockey returned to scale after winning the Stradbroke Handicap aboard Spicy Martini, the emotion of the moment hit hard. His legendary dad, Melbourne Cup-winning jockey John Marshall, would have been beaming from above.

Marshall’s breakthrough Group 1 triumph came in Queensland’s biggest race, giving Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds his second Stradbroke win after previously claiming the famous handicap with Tyzone in 2020, when training in partnership with son Trent.

That 2020 victory came in front of almost nobody, with Covid restrictions leaving Eagle Farm eerily quiet.

Six years later, it could not have been more different.

Spicy Martini, the $8000 yearling purchase turned Group 1 heroine, returned to a roaring reception from a packed Eagle Farm crowd after completing one of the great Stradbroke fairytales.

John Marshall, who rode Rogan Josh to victory in the 1999 Melbourne Cup and died in 2018 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, has remained a constant presence in Taylor’s life and career.

Taylor has long carried his father’s name on his jockey breeches, and on Saturday, the family connection felt impossible to ignore.

John Marshall won two Stradbrokes during his riding career, including one aboard Campaign King. Now his son has added his own name to the race’s honour roll.

“I think Dad would be proud,” Taylor Marshall said, fighting back tears.

“I carry his name and it is a huge factor as to why I am doing it.

“We wouldn’t be having this chat now, had I not been on this path because of my Dad.

“I know he would have a beaming smile right about now.

“It’s surreal, I don’t know how this happened.

“There have been countless people who have supported me unwaveringly and this is as much for them as it is for me. This is very special.

“On paper, everything seemed to align for this mare today, but it doesn’t always play out that way.

“This mare is so resilient and tough, she is bombproof.

“She has been such a pillar in my career already.

“I am excited for what is ahead.

“For her to put them to the sword at her 12th start and win a Group 1, the way she did, the world is her oyster.”

Spicy Martini had tackled the Stradbroke a year earlier as a three-year-old, but it was this year’s edition where everything came together.

Sent out a $13 chance, the mare was given a perfect ride by Marshall, who settled her just behind the speed before driving her clear when it mattered.

The result carried extra significance given Marshall’s career had not long ago reached a difficult crossroads. He was among several Queensland jockeys sidelined by stewards over a falsified health assessment form saga, leaving his riding future uncertain.

Saturday’s victory was a powerful reminder of his talent and resilience.

For Edmonds, the win was another special chapter in a race that has already meant plenty to his career.

When Tyzone won the Stradbroke in 2020, first prize had been cut to just $203,000 because of the pandemic. In 2026, Spicy Martini’s victory was worth $1.8 million.

“To win it twice is big for me,” Edmonds said.

“I’m 60 years of age now.

“How many more years I’ve got to go training, I am not sure but I will tell you one thing, if you give me a horse like this, I’ll win another Stradbroke too.

“I’ve got to give mention to my farrier who works tirelessly on Spicy Martini.

“Taylor Marshall produced a great ride, all my owners, they’ve all been fantastic and supported me the whole way through.

“And most of all, Spicy Martini, she’s a star.”

Behind the winner, Victorian trainer Cliff Brown enjoyed a massive result with two outsiders filling the minor placings. Sepals ($31) charged home for second, while stablemate Von Hauke ($41) ran a huge race for third.

Fangirl was always going to face a task on a heavy track but lost no admirers finishing fourth, while Private Eye gave a strong sight in front before holding on for fifth.

There was no hometown fairytale for Rothfire, who finished near the tail, while Tony Gollan’s Transatlantic was also well beaten.

But the day belonged to Spicy Martini, Toby Edmonds and, most of all, Taylor Marshall — a jockey riding with his father’s name on his breeches and a Group 1 Stradbroke now on his resume.
