Jarome Luai delivered one of the most memorable performances of his Wests Tigers career, scoring a stunning hat-trick to inspire a dramatic 36-28 comeback victory over the Gold Coast Titans in front of a packed and passionate Leichhardt Oval crowd.
The Tigers looked down and out after surrendering a 12-point lead and conceding 24 unanswered points, but Luai refused to let his side fold. The star five-eighth produced a captain’s knock, dragging his team back into the contest before sealing the win with a brilliant solo effort in the dying moments.
And after crossing for his third try of the afternoon, Luai made sure everyone knew it, delivering a shushing gesture towards his critics following a week where he found himself at the centre of headlines and scrutiny.
Controversy Clouds Tigers’ Triumph
While the Tigers faithful celebrated wildly, the Titans were left frustrated by a controversial moment late in the game.
Luai’s match-winning try came moments after Titans forward Arama Hau appeared to be the victim of a hip-drop tackle from Alex Seyfarth. Seyfarth was subsequently placed on report, but play continued, allowing the Tigers to launch the attack that ended with Luai crossing for the decisive score.
Had the penalty been awarded immediately, the Titans would have been attacking inside Tigers territory. Instead, they found themselves trailing and chasing the game.

Tigers Blow Early Lead
It wasn’t always celebration time for the home side.
The Tigers looked in complete control early, racing to a 12-0 lead and dominating field position through the opening half hour. But the Titans, sparked by the electric Keano Kini, flipped the script in spectacular fashion.
Gold Coast piled on 24 unanswered points, silencing the Leichhardt crowd and leaving Tigers supporters fearing another heartbreaking collapse.
Luai Leads the Fightback
With momentum firmly against them, Luai stepped up.
The playmaker ignited the comeback in the 47th minute, finishing off a slick wrap-around play involving Terrell May to score his first of the afternoon.
Moments later, Alex Seyfarth crashed through four defenders to score under the posts, bringing the crowd back to life and levelling the scores at 24-all.
Even when Phil Sami crossed to restore the Titans’ lead midway through the second half, the Tigers refused to go away.
The Luai Show
With 11 minutes remaining, Luai struck again.
Jahream Bula’s pass was knocked down by the Titans and bounced perfectly for the Tigers star, who reacted quickest to score and hand his side the lead once more.
Then came the moment Leichhardt Oval will remember for years.
As the clock wound down, Luai received the ball and danced through a cluster of Titans defenders, slicing through the line before racing away to complete his hat-trick and put the result beyond doubt.
The final siren sparked scenes of jubilation as Tigers fans celebrated one of the club’s most thrilling wins in recent memory.
After a week filled with questions and criticism, Luai answered in the best way possible — with a match-winning masterclass.
