Essendon’s Bold Bid for Jed Walter Could Be the Biggest AFL Trade Story of 2026

The Gold Coast Suns have spent years building one of the AFL’s most exciting young lists. Now they face a major retention battle, with Essendon making a serious play for emerging key forward Jed Walter.

According to AFL.com.au’s Inside Trading, Essendon has increased its offer for Walter as the 21-year-old weighs up his future at Gold Coast. AFL.com.au reported the Bombers had previously tabled a five-year offer worth around $800,000 per season, which was less than Gold Coast’s five-year offer to keep the academy product.

That has now changed.

AFL.com.au reported Essendon has since lifted its bid in an attempt to lure Walter to the Bombers, underlining how serious the club is about securing one of the competition’s most promising young key forwards.

The pursuit comes at a fascinating time for both clubs.

Gold Coast has already had to deal with heavy speculation around Ben King’s future, with the star forward remaining a major talking point as rival clubs monitor his contract situation. AFL.com.au reported King leads the AFL goalkicking race with 42 goals and that Hawthorn is believed to be keen on the restricted free agent.

That makes Walter’s signature even more important.

The Suns cannot afford to lose control of their forward-line future. Walter was drafted through Gold Coast’s academy system and has been viewed internally as a long-term pillar of the club’s attack. If King were to leave, Walter’s value to the Suns would only increase.

Essendon has already shown its interest is genuine.

AFL.com.au previously revealed the Bombers met with Walter just hours after the club sacked Brad Scott, with the meeting having already been scheduled as Walter went through his decision-making process.

That detail matters.

This is not casual trade chatter. Essendon has identified Walter as a priority target and appears prepared to invest heavily to bring him back to Victoria.

For the Bombers, the logic is obvious.

Quality young key forwards are incredibly difficult to find. Walter’s size, athleticism and upside make him exactly the type of player a club can build around for the next decade. Essendon has spent years searching for sustained forward-line stability, and landing a player of Walter’s profile would be a major statement.

Gold Coast, however, is not standing still.

Fox Sports reported last month that the Suns had increased their own offer to Walter to a five-year deal worth around $5 million as concern grew over rival interest and the broader uncertainty around their forward group.

Damien Hardwick has also publicly backed Walter to stay.

The Suns coach said last week he remained confident Walter and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan would remain at Gold Coast beyond 2026, despite the outside noise surrounding both players.

That confidence will soon be tested.

Essendon has money, motivation and a clear need for a young key forward. Gold Coast has the incumbent advantage, a strong development case and a forward-line future it cannot afford to lose.

For Walter, the decision may come down to more than dollars.

He must decide whether his long-term future is best served staying with the club that developed him, or joining a Victorian giant prepared to make him a centrepiece of its rebuild.

Either way, this is shaping as far more than a standard contract negotiation.

It could become one of the defining trade stories of 2026.
