Two of Sydney’s feature G1 handicaps take place on a big day of racing at Randwick. A consistent WFA performer, a Waterhouse star that rates highly dropping 7.5kg and a Newnham gelding slipping under the radar at big odds are the best bets for this week.

Randwick Race 5 –  Think It Over

A small field for this year’s Hill Stakes and when prices were released I tried hard to find something to beat the ever consistent Think It Over but I couldn’t. His last start 3rd behind champion mare Verry Elleegant and Epsom favourite Riodini reads extremely well. None of his rivals would be matching it with genuine Group 1 guns.

He maps to get a cosy run just behind a very slow speed. The only concern is whether he has peaked after a solid showing in the above mentioned race and a great win 2nd up in the G2 Chelmsford. Kerry Parker is a trainer that likes to keep something up his sleeve with his horses so I’m going to trust he can reproduce his best which will account for this lot.

Randwick Race 8 – Riodini

Hard not to stick with the George Main form lines here. Riodini controlled things in front on that day and then gave a big kick after straightening and it took the best horse in the country to run him down over the last 50m. Two big things in his favour on Saturday are that Verry Elleegant will not be contesting the Epsom and more importantly he drops 7.5kg down to 51.5kg under handicap conditions.

If there is a negative it has to be the speed map. After two great performances in weight for age races where he has been able to dictate terms, he may be faced with some early challengers carrying low weights in this handicap. He’ll need to show a different type of toughness to lead from start to finish here but carrying 51.5kg is the perfect remedy.

Randwick Race 10 – Marway

Specking Marway at good odds here. I was taken with his two trials where he has looked great finishing 2nd behind Lost and Running and then 3rd behind Mirra Vision and Big Parade. I was happy to watch 1st up as his 2nd up stats read much better at 6:3-1-0.

On that day he led them up and faded the last 100m to finish 5th behind Blondeau. With added fitness and a hot pace to trail I can see him being a big improver.
