Sydney racing heads to Newcastle for The Hunter. There’s still plenty of class on show and I’m looking to land a few winners on what should be a great day.

Newcastle Race 5 – Shibli
Chris Waller has a strong hand in this race and I’m leaning towards his grey stayer in Shibli. He was terrific a week ago at Rosehill when winning in a BM 78. Stepping up to this grade and dropping 2.5kg looks a good go. Stablemate Mightybeel looks to have potential and could be the main danger. Both of these horses met at Gosford over 1600m a few starts back and Shibli easily accounted for the Savabeel gelding.
He should settle a couple a lengths more positive than Mightybeel and can hopefully can hold him off late.

Newcastle Race 7 – Holstein
Holstein has been a 3yo from the Dunn yard that has taken a bit to find his best in his 5 career starts but he looks real value after his last start victory at Randwick over this trip. There are a lot of mixed form lines coming into this 3yo feature with many coming out of maidens at the provincial and country circuits. Expect him to settle a touch better than midfield.

Newcastle Race 8 – Lost and Running
The Everest 4th place getter is by far the class horse in this field and I am happy to take the risk with the horror 17 barrier. As sticky as the gate looks, where he could be 3-4 wide if Bowman decides to stick to his usual race pattern of sitting midfield, it’s just too hard to go past the form where he finished 2nd to Eduardo in The Classique Legend after running home into 4th in The Everest.
