Best Of The Best : Our 3 Best Bets For Saturday 22nd August

It’s a huge day of racing at Randwick with the Winx Stakes the headline & we’ve done the hard work for you to find our 3 best bets for the meeting including a $21 chance in the feature race.

Randwick Race 1 – Kiss the Bride

A huge day of racing kicks off with a BM78 over 2400m at Randwick. There isn’t a whole lot of depth in this one with Kiss the Bride and Desert Path the pair that bring the only strong city form to the table.

The Baker trained Kiss the Bride was impressive on the same track last start defeating subsequent winner Monsieur Sisu. The extra 600m in the only genuine query, having failed at his only attempt, but as a seasoned 5yo there can be some degree of confidence that he can put this field away.

Tip: Kiss the Bride 2 units

Randwick Race 4 –  Kaakit Akit

  • Trainer: Waterhouse & Bott
  • Jockey: T Clark
  • Barrier: 10
  • Price: $9 With TopSport

Keen on this lightly raced filly from the Waterhouse/Bott yard.  During the Autumn, Kaakiit Akit showed she was above average leading all the way on debut at Kensington. She then failed second-up in similar grade to this before being sent to the paddock.

The 5 weeks between those runs and the immediate spelling suggests that something may have gone amiss. She’s been prepared for this preparation with two impressive trials, winning the first and finishing a close third in the second.

There doesn’t appear to be any other noted leaders on paper and if she can get a few cheap sectionals it might take a lot from a more fancied rival to run her down without fitness on their side. See You Soon and Dame Giselle are deserved favourites on form but their recent barrier trials have not been enough to get excited about the short odds.

Kaakit Akit opened $11 but is unlikely to jump that quote. Anything beyond half of that will be good value.

Tip: Kaakit Akit 2 units

Randwick Race 7 – Brandenburg & Con Te Partiro

A tricky race on paper but hard to resist having a lash at the first G1 of the carnival. This writer is a huge fan of Master of Wine and Verry Elleegant. Both are huge chances to keep the Cups home in Australia this year but with that being said, the head has to prevail over the heart and look for value in a WFA G1 over 1400m.

Contrary to the race’s namesake, there are no proven G1 WFA performers lining up here so we will look for a horse with the scope to improve and become one.

Brandenburg is 4yo on the rise and looks likely to be prepared for the $7.5 million Golden Eagle for 4yo’s in October. Whilst Brandenburg hasn’t established himself as a genuine G1 contender yet, this looks like the perfect opportunity. He won the G2 Hobartville Stakes for 3yo’s over the same trip first-up last preparation and has not finished worse than 2nd in 3 first up attempts or 4 attempts at this distance. $21 looks huge value compared to some of his rivals whose grand finals will be in November.

Con Te Partiro is a 7yo on the rise winning the Coolmore Class (G1) and Coolmore Legacy (G1) against the fillies and mares last prep and has firmed from $13 to $8 in early markets. Waterhouse and Bott will smell the opportunity to add a G1 against the boys to her record and should have their mare primed to go first up after she narrowly went down to Slipper winner Prague in a recent trial. Brandenburg finished third in the same trial. She’s may struggle to get cheap sectionals up front in such a large field but if the breaks do go her way then she will be extremely hard to run down.

Tip: Brandenburg 1 unit EW & Con Te Partiro 2 units
