On a Sunday where there were two separate ATP 500 finals, American Ben Shelton of Atlanta, Georgia won the 2026 BMW Open in Munich on the same day that Arthur Fils of France won the Barcelona Open. For Shelton, it was his fifth career ATP title.
In Sunday’s final, Shelton defeated Flavio Cobolli of Italy in the final, 6-2, 7-5. Shelton broke Cobolli three times in nine opportunities. In Munich, Shelton was the second seed and Cobolli was the fourth seed. The other four players Shelton beat in Munich were American Emilio Nava (7-6, 3-6, 6-3) in the first round, Belgium’s Alexander Blockx (6-4, 7-6) in the second round, Brazil’s Joao Foseca (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) in the quarterfinals and Alex Molcan of Slovakia (6-3, 6-4) in the semifinals.
This was Shelton’s second ATP title on clay. The first came at the 2024 United States Men’s Clay Court Tennis Championship in Houston. Shelton defeated fellow American Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. It is interesting that Shelton won on clay in Munich a week after many Americans decided not to participate at Monte Carlo.Â
Shelton is the first American to win the BMW Open since 1993. Thirty-three years ago Ivan Lendl defeated Michael Stitch 7-6, 6-3.
This was Shelton’s second straight BMW Open final. Last year in Munich, Shelton lost 6-2, 6-4 to Germany’s Alexander Zverev, 6-2, 6-4.
Shelton’s most notable ATP title was the 2025 Canadian Open in Toronto. That particular event is part of the ATP Masters 1000 series. Shelton was also in the winner’s circle at the 2023 Japan Open and the 2026 Dallas Open.Â
Currently, Shelton is the top ranked American in the world. He is ranked sixth with 4070 points.
