Ballarat Preview: Waller’s Strong Ballarat Cup Bid
November 19, 2022
Chris Waller as he so often does is one of two trainers gang tackling the $500,000 Ballarat Cup (2000 metres) with three runners.
Waller gave punters a pointer by scratching Atishu from the $1 million The Gong at Kembla Grange to take on the Ballarat Cup.
Atishu, a $4.20 chance with TopSport will be joined by Desert Icon ($26) and also wet track specialist Polly Grey ($11) as Waller’s three pronged attack on the $500,000 2000 metres event.
Waller speaking on his weekly preview program with his assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth branded Atishu the best of their chances although he did say if the track was in the Heavy 9 or 10 range Polly Grey was the stable’s better hope.
At her last start, Atishu won the Matriarch Stakes at Flemington over 2000 metres and ran a faster time by 0.85 seconds for the trip than Zaaki did when he won the VRC Champions Stakes.
“She’s going terrific. She was strong at the finish of her 2000 metres race last start and provided that track isn’t too wet, a soft 7 or better she’ll go close as she’s going terrific but if the rain came Polly Grey comes right into play,” Waller said.

The stable will also be represented by tough middle distance galloper Desert Icon who he said had been freshened for this race.
Mike Moroney will also be represented by a trio of gallopers in the Ballarat Cup and they are TopSport’s $4 favourite in Bankers Choice, $12 chance Bermadez and Tokorangi ($20).
