Australia qualifies for the 2022 Davis Cup knockout stage

Australia has reached the knockout stage of the 2022 Davis Cup Finals. In Group C action in Hamburg, Germany on Thursday, Australia defeated France two matches to one to improve their record to two wins and one loss. Due to the fact Germany beat Belgium on Friday, it meant Germany and Australia both qualified for the knockout stage of the Davis Cup starting November 24 in Malaga, Spain.
In Australia’s win over France, Australia got a singles victory from Alex de Minaur of Sydney, and a doubles victory from Matthew Ebden of Perth and Max Purcell of Sydney. de Minaur defeated Benjamin Bonzi of France 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, and Edben and Purcell beat Nicolas Mahut and Arthur Rinderknech 6-4, 6-4.
Australia’s Davis Cup tie against Germany on Sunday does have some meaning. The winner gets first place in Group C. So far, the German squad consists of singles players Jan-Lennard Struff and Oscar Otte, as well as the doubles team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz.
Other nations that have qualified for the knockout stage so far are Italy, Netherlands and the United States. Italy is 2-0 in Group A play after wins over Croatia and Argentina. The Italian team contains 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner, as well as the doubles team of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini.
Meanwhile in Group D, the United States and Netherlands are both 2-0.
