The first ever season of The Golf League came to a close on Tuesday night from the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens. The first ever champion of the league is Atlanta Drive GC. On Tuesday, Atlanta beat the New York Golf Club two games to none in the best of three series. Atlanta won 6-5 in match one on Monday and 4-3 in match two on Tuesday.
The Atlanta Drive GC was composed of four American golfers, of which two were major champions (2017 and 2022 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky and 2009 United States Open champion Lucas Glover of Greenville, South Carolina). The other two golfers on Atlanta Drive GC were Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California and Billy Horschel of Grant, Florida. Atlanta GC is owned by Arthur Blank, who owns the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League.
Atlanta finished in third place after the regular season standings with a record of four wins and one loss for eight points. Then in the semifinals they defeated The Bay Golf Club 9-3.
The Golf League was a simulated indoor golf event, that was created in 2022. The initial goal was to launch play in 2024, but plans were delayed because there was damage to the construction of SoFi Center because of a severe Florida storm. When the league began play in January, it had instant credibility as it was televised by ESPN in the United States and Rogers Sportsnet in Canada. It was also interesting that golfers who participated in the league, but were not active on a particular night, provided television commentary, and you could hear conversations between golfers and their caddies.
