Ashleigh Barty pulls out of the French Open

Ashleigh Barty has pulled out of the 2020 French Open according to Jill Martin of CNN on Tuesday. Barty explained the reasons why she has decided to withdraw were due to coronavirus and her inability at this time to be prepared for the third grand slam of the year. Barty has not been able to spend time with her coach due to the state closures within Australia. Barty is from the Australian state of Queensland, and her coach Craig Tyzzer is in the Australian state of Victoria.
There have been 26, 513 cases of coronavirus in Australia, and 788 deaths. There are also 2689 active cases and 23, 036 recovered cases.
Barty is the defending champion of the French Open, and currently ranked number one in the world. With 8717 points, she leads Simona Halep of Romania, who is in second place with 6356 points. Barty won the 2019 French Open by easily defeating Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-3 in the final. She also missed the 2020 U.S. Open.
There is massive controversy surrounding the French Open at this time. There are currently plans to allow 11, 500 spectators despite the fact that there are 224, 783 active cases of coronavirus in France. Former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic of Canada has already spoken out about his concern of spectators at the tournament.

The United States Open has determined its semifinalists. On the women’s side, Naomi Osaka of Japan will play Jennifer Brady of the United States, and Serena Williams of the United States will play Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. On the men’s side, Dominic Thiem of Austria will play Daniil Medvedev of Russia, and Alexander Zverev of Germany will play Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain.
