Ascot Tip Sheet & Staking Plan – Saturday 12th December

With the rail at 3m and track expecting a little bit of rain over the coming days, the accompanying heat should dry it out to remain a Good 4. The last time the rail went out the 3m the track played on par with the recent pattern at Ascot of being hard to make ground early before evening out later in the day, very light winds shouldn’t play much of a role here.

Interesting galloper who brings some impressive form from his debut prep here. Defeated Western Rhythm and Mr Delegator on debut before rising to CL3 level and saluting again at his 2nd start which isn’t easy to do, beating some handy ones in Dew West and Aconite. Then ran 2nd by a space to the, at the time, flying Levitate, although there was a gap back to 3rd too. The 1st trial was a superb piece of work, and the 2nd trial wasn’t too bad either. Gets a nice map here and could even land 1-1, really wouldn’t surprise here, I think he’s pretty good horse and has heaps of talent.

Express Time brings the best formlines in. Donkey-licked them in CL3 grade two back with 2nd from that race franking the form since. Last start stepped up to test himself against some handy types in 66+ grade on a very wet track where he ran very well for 3rd behind subsequent winners Ziebell. Maps to just sit on the shoulder of Scooter’s Machine, with the 2 prior runs leading into this, his best in career to date, being on very wet tracks and returns to being back on top of the ground here. Has 2 wins to his name on dry tracks so it shouldn’t be too big an issue, although his peak figures both being on very soft tracks do deter me slightly, especially at the price. The rise to 1200m is also a query since he’s usually (bar one start) always stayed at the short course thus far in his career. He’s racing like it should pose no issue, which is only complimented by the way the track has been playing early in the day at Ascot of late. Just can’t get involved at the current price.

Race 2 – 12:47PM BUDGET TRUCK RENTAL PLATE (1200m)

7. Sheza Chalmer – 8. Toscana – 9. Smashing – 4. Chili Is Hot

Think this is a very nice filly in the making for Bernie Miller. Won its maiden when holding off and actually kicking away from Testing Love late on the line when that horse was backed into $1.60, and has since broke maiden status with ease. Stepped up to CL1 level on an on-speed dominated day in Bunbury when bucking the track pattern and coming from well back on the turn to gobble them up by 2.7L in a statement run. She possesses a ripping turn of foot and maps to get a perfect run in the 1-1 here from the draw and I honestly think if she can reproduce it’s a case off how do they beat her? I’m sold she is a very, very good filly and yes, I’m diving in.

Toscana’s debut performance in the city was super. Breezed outside a ripping tempo and the way she was able to stave the rest of them off and pick up the way she did through the line was very promising for the step-up to the 1200m here. Doesn’t get any favours from the draw and is likely made to breeze again here with a pretty smart one on her back but think she is a pretty talented filly herself. 2nd pick.
Smashing is going well without luck at the minute. Finished on the heels of Marlize midweek in a CL3 who was then pipped at the post in the Grandstand Cup on Sunday, before unlucky performances in the WA Guineas and again in the Lee-Steere when held up at a crucial stage although she still wouldn’t have won I don’t think. Would be some training performance to work up to a mile then back down to a 1200m event and win but she maps beautifully on the back of the leader and isn’t untoward for Nev Parnham to be able to do. 5th run in just over a month, pretty heavy workload, not for me.
Ā
Chili Is Hot also looks a nice little horse for Graeme Ballantyne. Hasn’t beaten a whole heap at her first 2 starts but has a nice will to win which you like to see in a horse. The trial I thought was terrific, under a tight hold for the entirety and burst through when given a little click up by Whiting to run 3rd. Maps to get right back in the field here from the draw and with her early speed this could prove a pretty tough ask, but she might be pretty good moving forward.

Race 3 – 1:27PM BUDGET MINIBUS RENTAL HANDICAP (1000m)

1. Don’t Fuss – 8. Ziebell – 4. Echo Effect – 2. Condor Heroes

Race 4 – 2:07PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1600m)

4. Phoneme – 1. Kelly’s Callisto – 4. The Fugazi – 8. Scoreline

Comes here off the back of 3 massive runs in a row. Has drawn out at his last two and been a victim of circumstance, getting right back in his races early in both cards when it has been very difficult to make any considerably ground. Finally draws an alley here and can hopefully sit closer in running and make his presence felt. On the 7 day back up, drops 3kg up slightly in grade despite the field not being that much deeper and all signs point towards Lane having some real intent here and think this is his race to win, horse is flying.

The Fugazi has been racing well without success. Couldn’t gun down Lorentinio last start with a significant weigh advantage, although it was difficult to make ground but still got a beautiful run on the back of that runner, makes me question whether he truly runs out the mile? 3 lengths off Truly Great in the RJ Peters two back now looks superb form for this, I’m just not sure I want to dive in at the $2.90 available.

Race 5 – 2:47PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1800m)
6. Em Tee Aye – 3. Tollman – 2. Mystery Miss – 5. Cambist
Race 6 – 3:24PM SALINGER HANDICAP (1100m)
2. Resortman – 1. Missing Pro – 6. Platinum Bullet – 5. Comfort Me

A case of simply backing the best horse in the race. Last start was some win, caught punching the breeze 3 deep on a break neck tempo from the wide draw before finally settling outside the leader after the first 500m had been run. Despite not a lot going right in the run, was just way too good for them and didn’t even look like losing once they’d cornered at the top of the straight. Maps to get a peach of a run leader’s back here and should just win. Anything over even money I am happy to pile in. Goes on his merry way to bigger and better races moving forward, a very likeable commodity. Looks a really nice double to play with Sheza Chalmer in race 2.
