Ascot Selections & Staking Plan: Saturday 27th February

A fairly different card this Saturday with an abundance of middle distance racing at Ascot and only the one race over the usually card-dominating sprint trips. The rail out 8m and hot weather suggests a standard pattern of hard to make ground early in the day before evening out as the day progresses. Track still in superb knick.

Race 1 – 12:12PM GLENROY CHAFF MAIDEN (1600 METRES)

2. Yardman – 5. Trisuem – 7. The Slug – 6. Scootin

Race 2 – 12:52PM VALE JOHN MARTINO HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

2. Phoneme – 4. That’s Funny Az – 3. Our Idyll – 5. Marocchino

Race 3 – 1:32PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

2. Porphyrio – 3. Queen Takes King – 5. Acermetric – 10. Scintillating

Porphyrio

Really nice win in what isn’t the worst CL3 you will see when coming from the rear and gunning down No Apology (66+ performed and 60+ winner) in the shadows. Can just about knock every other runner in the field for one reason or another and just think she has got some really nice form behind her for this. Was good two back when just way too far out of her ground this track/trip in a stronger race than this, now has the win and confidence booster under her belt and is drawn beautifully for a soft run closer to the speed with the 54.5kgs after Bennett’s claim. She goes very close.

1.25 Units WIN

Queen Takes King has ability, but was every conceivable to run down Designer Prince of all horses last start and wasn’t able too. Albeit she was there off a hiccup and 5 weeks between runs so am expecting a more improved performance here but I’m just struggling to trust where she is at?

Race 4 – 2:08PM TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

6. Seminole Brave – 2. Fangio – 8. No Apology – 5. Giant Leap

Race 5 – 2:45PM LEX PIPER STAKES (1600 METRES)

3. Western Empire – 1. Em Tee Aye – 4. Castillo De Lago – 7. Red Hot Hope

Race 6 – 3:20PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

6. Tambora – 5. Eurasia – 8. Reliable Star – 9. Sunset Cruise

Race 7 – 3:55PM SCHWEPPES – ASCOT 1000 GUINEAS (1800 METRES)

1. Solaia – 3. Chiclett – 6. Fashion Queen – 5. Testing Love

Chiclett

In a race where Bob has chucked 5 of his in to see which ones might be okay and which ones are shit, and one where I am expecting Solaia to be incredibly hard to beat, I’m optimistic at how well Chiclett can run up to the 1800m. Resumed 1st up over the 1400 at Bunbury and was plunged in betting, winding up down the outside late to grab subsequent winner Born To Try. I loved the manner in which she really let rip with that turn of foot she possesses once she got clear and although she may have peaked a little late, she was 1st up there and with the run under her belt I think she profiles really well out to the 1800m in a race that won’t be run at a cracking tempo. Jade should be able to just settle her down midfield with some cover here and given you can just about question the set-up for almost all cerise and white runners, at $3.40 a drum I’m fairly confident she can finish off into the top 3 here. Very place heavy.
