Annika Sorenstam of Bro, Sweden, one of the greatest female golfers of all-time, is set to participate at her first women’s golf major since 2008 according to Max Schreiber of Golf Channel. Sorenstam qualified for the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open by winning the 2021 U.S. Senior Women’s Open.
At the age of 50 this past August, Sorenstam won for the first time on the Legends Tour. She clobbered the field and defeated Liselotte Neumann of Sweden, her nearest competitor, by eight strokes.
Sorenstam has won 10 major titles all-time, which is tied with Babe Zaharias for the fourth most ever. She is only behind Americans Patty Berg (15 titles), Mickey Wright (13 titles) and Louise Suggs (11 titles). Sorenstam’s U.S. Open titles came in 1995 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1996 in Southern Pines, North Carolina, and in 2006 in Newport, Rhode Island.
Interestingly, the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open will also take place in Southern Pines, North Carolina, on the same Pine Needles Golf Course, which Sorenstam won on in 1996. When Sorenstam won the 1996 U.S. Open, she posted a score of -8, and beat Kris Tschetter by six strokes. The other two U.S. Women’s Open champions at Pine Needles over the years were Karrie Webb of Australia (2001), and Cristie Kerr of the United States (2007).
The 2022 U.S. Women’s Open is also noteworthy because of the purse. Starting in 2022, the purse for the tournament is $10 million, which is a raise from $5.5 million, as it has been over each of the last three years. Sorenstam will be playing as the president of the International Golf Federation.
