76ers fire head coach Doc Rivers
May 17, 2023

According to Tom Ignudo of CBS News Philadelphia on Tuesday, the Philadelphia 76ers fired head coach Doc Rivers of Chicago, Illinois. The 61-year-old had been the head coach of the 76ers since October 3, 2020. In three seasons, the 76ers had a record of 154 wins and 82 losses for a superb winning percentage of .653. Even though the 76ers were able to win a playoff series in all three seasons that Rivers was the head coach, they could not reach the conference finals.
In Rivers’s last game he coached for Philadelphia, the 76ers were steamrolled 112-88 by the Boston Celtics. Rivers was unable to put together a game plan where Philadelphia could stop Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who came away with 51 points. That was the most points a player has ever scored in the seventh game of a playoff series in NBA history.

Rivers is the second NBA coach to lose his job after being eliminated from the second round of the 2023 playoffs. He follows Monty Williams of Fredericksburg, Virginia, who was fired by the Phoenix Suns on Saturday.
Rivers has had 1096 wins as a NBA head coach. That is the ninth most wins of all-time. In addition to his 154 wins with Philadelphia, he has 416 wins with the Celtics, 356 wins with the Los Angeles Clippers, and 171 wins with the Orlando Magic. While with the Magic in 2000, Rivers was named the NBA coach of the year. While with the Celtics in 2008, he won the NBA Finals. Boston defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. The Lakers were coached by Phil Jackson of Deer Lodge, Montana, who is seventh on the list with 1155 wins.
