49ers trade Trey Lance to the Cowboys
August 27, 2023

According to Tyler Dragon of USA Today on Friday, the Dallas Cowboys have acquired quarterback Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers for a fourth round draft pick in the 2024 National Football League Draft. Lance is joining his second NFL franchise after playing the last two seasons with the 49ers.
Lance did not play much in 2022. That is because he only played two games due to a season-ending ankle injury. In two games, he completed 15 of 31 passes for 194 passing yards and one interception.
Heading into the 2022 season, Lance was expected to be the face of the 49ers organization. However, it was not long before the 49ers had to change their plans. San Francisco then went with Jimmy Garoppolo, and quarterbacked San Francisco until week 13, when the franchise went with rookie Brock Purdy.
The 49ers have been significantly criticized for making the trade. The skeptics have every reason to be skeptical. One could argue that Purdy has not done enough to prove himself as an elite everyday quarterback for a whole season, and the fact that they did not keep Lance around is a little surprising. However, there is a belief according to Dan Orlovsky of ESPN that Lance does not fit Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and that is one reason San Francisco made the interesting deal.
The fact that the Cowboys signed Lance is interesting when you consider the fact they already have Dak Prescott. However, Prescott has not been the healthiest quarterback the Cowboys have had over the last couple of seasons and Lance is definitely the best backup quarterback Dallas has had in recent years.
