This is a big weekend on the golf calendar. Why? It is because it is golf’s unofficial fifth major. The Players Championship is set to take place at the TPC Stadium Course outside of Jacksonville. What we see on this course is the signature 17th hole where the green is completely surrounded by water.
The Players Championship also has the biggest purse in golf. The winner receives $4.5 million. Here are the three golfers we like the most this week.
Scottie Scheffler
Scheffler is the betting favourite this week at +480. The reason is because he has won two of the last three Players Championships. In 2023, he beat Tyrrell Hatton of Great Britain by five strokes after shooting a score of -17. Then a year later in 2024, Scheffler was three strokes better and won the tournament with a score of -20. Scheffler is one of only three players to be -20 or better at TPC Sawgrass. The other two were Australia’s Greg Norman and the late Fuzzy Zoeller. Oh, and by winning these two Players Championships, Scheffler won $9 million.
Collin Morikawa
Morikawa is considered here because of his consistency this season. In his last three starts, her won Pebble Beach, finished seventh at the Genesis and fifth at Bay Hill.
Rory McIlroy
The world number two is also a two-time Players champion. McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland won the 2019 Players Championship and 2025 Players Championship. By winning the 2025 Players Championship, it gave McIlroy the necessary confidence to win the 2025 Masters. It was his first major title in 11 years.
