2022 NRL Round 17 Preview: Our Selections

It may be a shortened round due to Origin but we have still found some interesting picks for you to follow in round 17.

2022 Season Premium Tipping Results:

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS VS SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS – FRIDAY JULY 8, 7:55PM, MCDONALD JONES STADIUM

In the final nine rounds the Knights face only two sides currently inside the top eight, so there’s good reason for optimism on the back of Friday’s drubbing of the Titans.

South Sydney bounced back from its pre-rep round debacle against St George Illawarra to consolidate seventh spot with a 30-12 thrashing of Parramatta in Round 16. The Rabbitohs’ first win of 2022 against a top-six team was sparked by Latrell Mitchell’s return, the fullback’s presence taking pressure of under-fire halves Cody Walker and Lachlan Ilias.

Souths have won 11 of their last 13 against Newcastle, including a 46-20 qualifying final result in 2020 and a 24-10 in the sole clash last season.

WESTS TIGERS VS PARRAMATTA EELS – SATURDAY JULY 9, 7:35PM, LEICHARDT OVAL

After the high of back-to-back wins over the Eels and Rabbitohs in round 6-7, the Tigers have lost seven of their next eight games and parted company with coach Michael Maguire.

Parramatta’s up-and-down formline shows no signs of correcting to an even keel, bookending an excellent 26-16 win over the Roosters in Round 15 with heavy looses to the Bulldogs (34-4) and Rabbitohs (30-12). The Eels are still relatively well-placed in sixth with a 9-6 record but need to build momentum heading into September.

The Tigers’ last-second, Jackson Hastings-inspired 21-20 upset of the Eels on Easter Monday snapped a seven-match losing streak in the rivalry. This is the teams’ first clash at Leichhardt Oval since 2013 – a ground Parramatta last won at in 2002.

BRISBANE BRONCOS VS ST GEORGE-ILLAWARRA DRAGONS – SUNDAY JULY 10, 4:05PM, SUNCORP STADIUM

The fifth-placed Broncos host the eighth-placed Dragons at Suncorp Stadium in a pivotal clash for both sides in the run to the finals.

The Dragons have climbed to eighth with four wins from their last five matches, backing up their first-half blitz to upset Souths 32-12 with a controversial-but-gritty 12-10 eclipse of the Raiders in Wollongong.

The Broncos lose Patrick Carrigan, Kurt Capewell, Selwyn Cobbo and Thomas Flegler to the Queensland side, while Payne Haas was ruled out of the decider with injury. Compounding matters, Te Maire Martin and Corey Jensen are also sidelined.

The Saints are on a five-match winning streak against the Broncos, culminating in a 52-24 beatdown at Jubilee Oval in their sole encounter last season after three straight victories at Suncorp Stadium. Each of the clubs’ last five encounters produced at least 46 points.
