Zach LaVine shines in Bulls upset win over Celtics
December 21, 2024
The Chicago Bulls beat the Boston Celtics 117-108 on Thursday at the Toronto Dominion Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The win was noteworthy because the Bulls came away with the win even though they were 14.5 point underdogs.
This was the second biggest upset in the NBA this season. In both cases, it was the Celtics that were the heavy favourite heading into the game and lost. On November 12, the Celtics were a 16.5 point favourite against the Atlanta Hawks, but lost 117-116.
In the Bulls’s win over the Celtics, Bulls small forward Zach LaVine of Renton, Washington led the way with 36 points. In fact all Bulls starters reached double figures in points. Shooting guard Ayo Dosunmu of Chicago, Illinois had 17 points, center Nikola Vucevic of Montenegro had 16 points, power forward Patrick Williams had 14 points, and guard Coby White of Goldsboro, North Carolina had 12 points. Meanwhile, off the bench and in a non-starting role, small forward Julian Phillips of Killeen, Texas had 10 points.
It was the fourth quarter that was Chicago’s best. They were trailing 86-82 with 12 minutes left before outscoring the Celtics 35-22 in the final 12 minutes. Five different Bulls made a three-point shot in the last period. They were Williams, LaVine, Donsumu, Phillips and guard Talen Horton-Tucker of Chicago, Illinois, who made a 25 foot three point shot to tie the game at 90 with nine minutes and 56 seconds left.
With the win, the Bulls improved to a record of 13 wins and 15 losses, and are in an eighth place tie with the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics are now at 21 wins and six losses, and are second in the East, and two games back of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
