Young gun Galvin ‘going nowhere’ after Tigers emergency meeting

Wests have declared that Lachlan Galvin has committed to seeing out his long contract with the club—which runs through to 2026—after the 18-year-old’s parents met with Tigers boss Shane Richardson.

The NRL world has been in a flurry around Galvin over the last few weeks, with the spark point being several release requests made by the Concord young gun before the season and more recently after the team’s 56-14 Dragons thrashing.

His manager, Isaac Moses, submitted the last release demand after Round 14, around the same time it was reported the five-eighth had told teammates he simply “wanted out” as soon as possible.

The latest demands were made after Galvin’s ongoing hand injury came to light.

The Tigers instantly went into panic mode as headlines across the NRL media questioned whether Galvin would be at the club beyond the end of the season. Richardson quickly set up a meeting with Galvin’s parents, which was held on Wednesday—The Sporting Base heard it was deemed “quite good” for both parties.

“His parents are 100 per cent behind the club, and 100 per cent supportive of Lachie being at the club,” Richardson said after the secret Wednesday meeting.

“We had a really positive meeting. They made a point at the beginning… which I thought was really important, that they were unbelievably happy with the way we’ve handled his hand [injury]. They were involved with the specialist, and they haven’t got one complaint about the medical staff when it comes to his hand.”

Soon after, club head coach Benji Marshall told reporters that Galvin had “made it clear he wants to stay, and he wants to be here.” He then added: “He’s with us with our vision moving forward. That’s all that needs to be said. He’s going nowhere.”

While there may still be questions about Galvin’s future, especially what The Sporting Base understands is a long-held desire to join the Penrith Panthers and play alongside Nathan Cleary, but for now, things seem resolved. Galvin and his management have yet to take a second look at the extension tabled by the Tigers early last week.

No matter what, Galvin was always going to miss this weekend’s Saturday match against the Gold Coast Titans, but is expected to return against the Canberra Raiders later in June.
