WTA star Garbine Muguruza retires at age 30

According to Dzevad Mesic of Tennis World on Monday, two-time grand slam singles champion Garbine Muguruza of Barcelona, Spain has retired at the age of 30. Muguruza won the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon. In the 2016 French Open final, Muguruza beat Serena Williams of the United States 7-5, 6-4, and in the 2017 Wimbledon final, Muguruza beat Venus Williams of the United States 7-5, 6-0. She is the only player ever to beat each Williams sister in a grand slam final.
Muguruza was the 24th player in women’s tennis history to be ranked first in the world. She accomplished that feat from September 11, 2017 to October 8, 2017. Muguruza was the second Spaniard player to receive the honour. She followed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, the four-time grand slam champion who was first in the world for a dozen weeks in 1995. Sanchez-Vicario won the 1989, 1994 and 1998 French Open and 1994 United States Open.
Overall, Muguruza won 10 WTA titles. In addition to the three grand slam titles, she won the 2014 Hobart International in Australia, the 2015 China Open, the 2017 Cincinnati Open, the 2018 and 2019 Monterrey Open, the 2021 Dubai Championship, the 2021 Chicago Fall Classic and the 2021 WTA Finals.Â
A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Muguruza moved to Spain at the age of six and joined the Bruguera Tennis Academy. The facility was organized by Lluis Bruguera, father of Sergi Bruguera, who won the 1993 and 1994 French Open.
The retirement of Muguruza should not come as a huge surprise. That is because she took a leave of absence from professional tennis in 2023, To begin the 2023 tennis season, Muguruza lost all four matches she participated in.
