Winx ‘Shinning and Ready to Perform’ Ahead of What Could Be Final Race at Flemington
October 4, 2018
Champion Australian Mare Winx is in great condition and has travelled to Melbourne in good order ahead of Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.
In an interview in the lead up to the race, trainer Chris Waller hinted that future racing campaigns were no guarantee for the super mare. Waller responded hesitantly when asked if this would be her last trip to Flemington.
“I would say so, we’re just taking it one run at a time. Who knows what’s around the corner with Winx”.
Waller was more positive when questioned about the fitness and mental state of Winx heading into Saturday.
“She’s settled in from her travel well, she’s been here before. This is like a second home for her. She’s familiar with the track and she’s familiar with the routine”.
In an ominous warning for her rivals Waller also suggested that she may be in better physical condition than this time last year.
“We take photos of all our horses every Monday 52 weeks a year. We compared her photo from Monday to the one we took this time last year and if anything her coat is a little more advanced”, Waller said.
Winx is $1.10 with bookmakers to take out her 28th straight victory in Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes. She is currently $1.30 to win the 2018 Cox Plate later in the month, which will be her grand final for this campaign and potentially her final race.
