Wighton is considering Souths backflip that would see him stay with Canberra
August 23, 2023
High-value 2024 signing Jack Wighton is reportedly looking into backflipping on his South Sydney Rabbitohs deal to stay on with the Canberra Raiders for the remainder of his NRL playing career.
League Initiative is reporting that Wighton, who is expected to join the Rabbitohs ahead of the club’s 2024 season, has been quietly looking into breaking his four-year deal with the Sydney outfit. Per the online publication, the star is “considering his legal options in order to remain with the Raiders.”
For what its worth, The Sporting Base has heard very little on this front and the rumour was talked about and shot down within Fox Sports circles and on NRL 360 this week too.
Wighton originally took less money to join the Bunnies to try and win a premiership.
The report from League Initiative suggests Wighton has been closely watching the spot fires at the Rabbitohs and is no longer convinced that he can claim an NRL trophy there before he calls time on his tenured 238-game career.

While there’s likely no recourse for Wighton, 30, to break his four-year, $3.2 million agreement with South Sydney, it is interesting that these rumours are even springing up in the first place. Souths has been splashed across the media after a sour loss to the Knights last weekend that culminated in several News Corp articles taking aim at Latrell Mitchell in particular.
As of today they’re still teetering in the eight but have been leapfrogged by the Knights and are only in eighth place above the Cowboys and Roosters thanks to bye points and their +73 point difference. North Queensland sports a +12 and is on the same points, while the Roosters sit level and have a dismal -62 difference.

By the time Wighton arrives in Redfern and pulls on the Souths colours, the 2023 NRL season will be in the rearview mirror no matter what has happened between now and early October.
