Who are five players that have withdrawn from the 2025 French Open?

The second major of the 2025 tennis season is set to begin on Sunday from Roland Garros. Here are five players who will not be competing for various reasons.
Matteo Berrettini
The world number 28 has pulled out of the French Open due to an unspecified injury according to the Associated Press. However, it should be noted that Italy’s Matteo Berrettini pulled out of the Madrid Masters in the third round because of an abdominal injury. He played one set against eventual finalist Jack Draper of Great Britain and lost 7-6. Berrettini then lost 7-5, 2-0 to Norway’s Casper Ruud in the third round of the Italian Open. Berrettini’s finest accomplishment was reaching the final of Wimbledon in 2021, before losing to Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. He has not played at the French Open since 2021.
Zhizhen Zhang
The world number 81 is out with a knee injury according to Josh Reynolds of the Last Word on Sports. Zhang of Shanghai, China has reached the third round of the last two French Opens and made the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in doubles last year with Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac.
Juncheng Shang
The world number 71 from Beijing, China had foot surgery in March and has not played since the Australian Open where he lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain 7-6, 5-2. Shang made the third round of the Australian Open and United States Open last year. He also won the 2024 Chengdu Open, where he beat Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the final, 7-6, 6-1.
David Goffin
The world number 47 injured his foot in the first round of the Madrid Open while playing Alexandre Muller of France according to Jules Hypolite of Tennis Temple. Goffin did not play the Italian Open and will not be playing the French Open either. The 34-year-old from Rocourt, Belgium reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 French Open. Goffin has won six ATP events in his career, including two on clay, the 2014 Austrian Open, and the 2022 Grand Prix Hassan in Morocco.
Sara Sorribes Tormo
The world number 120 on the WTA Tour is taking a break from tennis for mental and physical strains according to Reynolds. The native of Castellon de la Plana, Spain reached the fourth round of the 2023 French Open. Sorribes Tormo has won six WTA events, including four on clay. They have been the 2019 Morocco Open, the 2022 Istanbul Cup, the 2024 Madrid Open, the 2025 Copa Colsanitas in Colombia.
