Norway’s Viktor Hovland is the 2023 FedEx Cup champion. On Sunday, Hovland shot a final round score of seven-under-par to take the FedEx Cup title and close out the 2022-23 PGA Tour season.
Hovland entered the 2023 Tour Championship on Thursday in second place at -8 and two strokes back of the leader, Scottie Scheffler of the United States. The northern European then posted a first round score of two-under-par 68, a second round score of six-under-par 64, a third round score of four-under-par 66, and a fourth round score of seven-under-par 63.
In the second round on Friday, Hovland had a very impressive string of golf on the back nine. He had five birdies in six holes as he birdied the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 17th holes. Hovland then had two more impressive birdie streaks on Sunday. He birdied the fourth, fifth, and sixth holes, and then the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes. Xander Schauffele was the nearest competitor in second place at -22.
Hovland had entered the Tour Championship a winner just the week before at the BMW Championship in Chicago. That put him in great position to win one of golf’s most prestigious prizes of 2023.
The PGA Tour deserves high praise for ending the FedEx Cup championship before the United States Open in tennis started Monday from Flushing Meadows, New York, and the 2023 National Football League season starts September 7 from Kansas City, Missouri. On opening night the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Detroit Lions.
The next significant golf tournament is the Ryder Cup. That will take place in Rome, Italy from September 29 to October 1.
